America’s Bravest New Home Dedication

Columbus, GA (October 28, 2014) — Floor & More Carpet One Floor & Home in Columbus, GA will be attending a very special ceremony this Thursday in Fortson, GA. They will be helping to dedicate a new custom smart home for injured Army Sergeant First Class Michael Schlitz. The home was built through Building for America’s Bravest (BFAB) which is a proud program of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation and the Gary Sinise Foundation.

Floor & More Carpet One Floor & Home installed all the flooring and tile for the home which was designed to help Michael regain his independence after losing both of his arms and suffering from burns over 85% of his body while serving in Baghdad. His new home will help him to become more self-sufficient and drastically improve his quality of life.

Participation in this project is part of a larger commitment by Carpet One Floor & Home to install all the flooring for the smart homes built by Building for America’s Bravest throughout the US.

“It is an honor to install flooring and tile in this custom home designed for Michael,” said Al Gaston, president of Floor & More Carpet One Floor & Home. “We are excited to see Michael receive the iPad that will control his new smart home.”

While Carpet One Floor & Home stores are providing the installation of all flooring for BFAB’s smart home, they have partnered with Mohawk to provide materials for the project.

“Mohawk has provided beautiful floors and tile that are also functional in this home,” said Gaston.

Mike Schlitz

A little about Michael Schlitz, U.S. Army, Fortson, GA:

SFC Michael Schlitz says, “There are only two ways to find an improvised explosive device. Either it finds you or you find it first. Unfortunately, it found us that day.”

In 2007, Michael and his unit were in Baghdad on a basic road-clearing mission looking for enemy explosives. Two artillery shells attached to a propane tank went off and destroyed Michael’s truck, threw him away from the blast, and set his entire body on fire. Michael describes the incident as “basically being burned alive.” He not only lost his arms and suffered burns on over 85% of his body but also had to deal with the tragic deaths of his crewmates.

Today, Michael shares his story of what he has learned with fellow wounded servicemen and women. Michael says, “On the day I got hurt, I lost my entire crew. Now, I want to live a better life for them. A life they would be proud of.”

Building For America’s Bravest!

Building for America’s Bravest!

Building for America’s Bravest is a program co-developed by the  Tunnel to Towers Foundation and the Gary Sinise Foundation to build Smart Homes  for America’s most catastrophically injured veterans. Tunnel to Towers was started in tribute to  Stephen Siller, an NYFD firefighter who lost his life on 9/11.

Stephen was off  duty and headed to play golf with his brothers on Staten Island. When he heard that the World Trade Center had  been attacked, he turned his truck around to drive into Manhattan to join his  team. Stuck in the Brooklyn Battery  Tunnel, he grabbed his sixty-plus pounds of gear and ran to the World Trade  Center. Stephen Siller lost his life  that day but his family made a decision to follow in his footsteps to help  others, and formed the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Every year they hold a run through the  Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the site of the World Trade Center in his honor, raising  funds to help those in need. This year, over  30,000 runners joined the effort.

When Tunnel to  Towers learned that a young Staten Island man was the first soldier ever to  survive a quadruple amputation as a result of a wartime casualty, they decided  to build him a “Smart Home”, completely customized to his needs with touch and  voice controls for essential functions.  Off duty firefighters literally stood on street corners and in fairs to  raise the funds necessary, almost a million dollars, to build a smart home for  Brendan Morroco.

The Tunnel to  Towers Foundation partnered with the Gary Sinise Foundation to form the Building for America’s Bravest program,  with the specific mission to build Smart Homes for America’s most  catastrophically injured veterans.

Carpet One Floor & Home and Mohawk Industries have signed on to  supply the flooring and installation labor for the 46 Smart Homes in  development over the next 3 years.

Attend  a Lt. Dan Band concert in your area. Gary Sinise started the Lt. Dan Band and  tours the country raising funds to build Smart Homes. We’ll be posting the Lt. Dan Band  schedule. Please let us know if you plan  to attend a Lt. Dan Band concert and we’ll make sure you have the opportunity  to meet the team from Tunnel to Towers and the veteran recipient. These veterans are simply amazing people, and  you’ll love the opportunity to meet with them and understand their unique  needs, while thanking them for their service to our country.

Follow  Tunnel to Towers on Facebook, and “like” their updates. Let’s get the word out about this amazing  organization, and help these veterans obtain the homes they so deserve as soon  as possible.

Thank you SO  much for being who you are, and for helping with Building for     America’s Bravest!!!
