The Power of Carpet One

When Barbara and I purchased the Columbus Carpet Mill Store in 2008, we didn’t know a lot about Carpet One.  What we did know was that the Store had grown well beyond its carpet mill outlet store roots which dated back to its beginning in 1964.  After a few months of debate, we decided to change the name of the store to Flooring & More Carpet One.

We did this for several reasons:

  • the Store offers much more than carpet including wood, tile, vinyl, laminate, rugs…not to mention our Steamatic cleaning and restoration division (www.SteamaticOfColumbus.com)
  • the old name carried the connotation of a mill outlet store…while we still have great bargains in our 18,000 square foot warehouse, everything we carry is a first quality, running line item
  • we began to understand the power and value of being part of Carpet One

So our new logo became this:

So why are we so proud to be a part of Carpet One?  A little learning and experience with Carpet One quickly provided the answer.  In one way or another, Barbara and I have had the privilege to have been a part of several fine organizations, and we can easily say that Carpet One stands shoulder to shoulder with the best of the businesses with which we have been associated.  The attitude is simple: outstanding service with the best products and prices for every Carpet One customer.  In fact, something that we discussed recently at a Carpet One trade show is what we call our Carpet One brand box:

  • Over 100 million floors sold…Carpet One has installed over 100 million new floors of all types in homes and rooms of all styles
  • #1 buyer in the world…as a member of the world’s largest floor covering buying group, we buy the best brands for less to sell for less
  • Over 1,000 locations…Carpet One’s locally owned and family operated stores have provided generations of personalized service and community support
  • Over 20,000 years combined experience…beyond expert training, we have the experience required to ensure that your floors are installed perfectly
  • 100% satisfaction guaranteed…if you don’t love the Carpet One floor you choose, we’ll replace it for free.  That’s our unique Beautiful Guarantee.

As Barbara and I have learned, Carpet One truly is “nationally known, but locally owned.”  Come see us and put the power of Carpet One in your home.  Beautiful.  Made Affordable.

Learning is a Constant at CFM and Steamatic

Learning is (or should be) a life long experience.  We try to practice what we preach.  At Flooring & More, we have regular PK’s (product knowledge meetings).  The subjects can cover products, installation techniques, promotions, applications, trends, and a whole lot more.  We are committed to providing expert advice and guidance through our store where there are literally 1,000′s of products.  Some products are better suited for certain applications than others.  For instance, you may have seen an earlier post on our dogs (family members and the live with us inside as well as out).  We are also looking and replacing existing carpet with wood flooring.  The choice quickly moved to a handscrapped, distressed wood look to better “tolerate and disguise” the inevitable knicks and scratches that will occur over time.

Joey, Chris, Sondra and Yong listen to a Bonsol technical rep.

Not all of our training is at the store or even local.  We travel to get the best information and to attend regular trade shows and seminars.  Below is a picture of Glen (www.SteamaticOfColumbus.com division).  He is playing co-pilot on our way to Ft. Worth, Tx for training and to bring back some new equipment.

Best Carpet for Pets

Chloe and Cooper...two of our more active children!

I received the following question over the weekend and thought it might provide some answers to all of us with animals that are more than just pets, more like family members.  Here are two of our guys who are part of our “active” test team for carpet and upholstery!

Question: Al, I have five dogs and five cats (I’m a sucker for stray animals), and as you can imagine my carpet takes a beating.  Which brand and style (pile and cut) of carpet would be best for ware(heavy traffic) and hiding dirt and hair?

Thanks, Michelle

Answer: Michelle, we're dog lovers, too!  Right now, we're down to only three dogs and one cat, all members of the family with full range of the house.  Our suggestion would be a lower pile friese (think low pile shag), and maybe something in a fleck pattern (using the color combination to help hide dirt between cleanings).  Given the pet situation, we would also suggest you consider a Stainmaster carpet pad under your carpet.  The Stainmaster pad has an anti-microbial treatment as well as a moisture barrier to help prevent liquids, including urine, from soaking into the pad (which is impossible to clean completely because of its foam characteristics).

On the carpet fiber, you have two primary choices: nylon and PET (polyester).  Nylon has traditionally been a longer wearing, more durable fiber but is a little less tolerant of stains.  Having said that, today's anti-stain treatments have come a long way.  Polyester, on the other hand, is generally a softer fiber and is naturally more stain resistant than nylon.  We don't think you should rule out either without looking at the options they both offer.

One final thought in terms of a specific product is that you consider the Bliss Healthy Essence line of carpet from Beaulieu.  The Bliss Healthy Essence line features Magic Fresh which is an odor fighting treatment built right into the carpet fiber, a real plus if pet odors are a problem.  Bliss Healthy Essence also features Silver Release technology, which like Magic Fresh, is built into the carpet fiber.  Silver release is a Beaulieu patented technology which actually kills bacteria making it an anti-microbial product just like the Stainmaster pad.  You can see more about Bliss carpets at www.blissflooring.com.

And don't forget professional cleaning.  All of our major carpet manufacturer's recommend professional hot water extraction cleaning at least once a year.  In your case, as with our dogs, we clean a little more frequently than that.  You can find out more about professional cleaning at www.SteamaticOfColumbus.com.

I hope this helps!    Al

Carpet Should Be Dry When Clean

Steamatic of Columbus has been part of the Flooring & More Carpet One family for 36 years.  During that time, you really get to know a few things about cleaning carpet, rugs, upholstery and drapery.  First a few fun points to note:

  • “steam” cleaning uses hot water, typically around 195 degrees F, to break down dirt and grease…most greases and oil begin to break down at 140 degrees
  • the water in a “hot water extraction” system is simply the “carrier” to loosen the grease and dirt from the fiber and then carry that dirt with it as it is extracted (vacuumed) out of the carpet
  • if water is left behind in your carpet, you can bet dirt is, too
  • most carpet manufacturer’s recommend prefessional cleaning at least once a year (your family composition and lifestyle may dictate more or less frequesnt cleaning)

Depending on the humidity (let’s face it, we live in the South where humidity is a fact of life!), your carpet should be dry or close to dry when the cleaning is finished.  That’s not to say immediately after the cleaning wand passes over the carpet, but if you have four rooms being cleaned, we find that the first room is fairly dry by the time we start the fourth room.  This is important because it means that the water AND dirt have been removed from your carpet.  Additionally, the potential for mold or mildew from any remaining dampness or the tendancy for wet carpet to attract more dirt is being approriately managed.
